Three years ago, his doctor told him he had leukemia and needed a bone-marrow transplant. The potentially life-saving treatment is expensive. His insurer turned him down. Fortunately, Mercado's doctor went to bat for him and pressed the insurer to pay up as promised. Officials agreed to cover the $200,000 in basic costs. Mercado and his family would have to pay the rest - $50,000 - out of pocket. Family, friends, churches and the Internet were deployed to raise the money. On Jan. 15, 2008, doctors at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit succeeded in saving Mercado's life. The Detroit Free Press reported this week that Mercado is alive and well and cancer free. His insurer? The government of Canada. More...
