Canada, unfortunately, is following closely in Australia's and Great Britain's footsteps regarding firearm ownership. I have for a number of years tried, without success, to promote the benefits of safe firearm ownership to the average non gun owning Canadian to no avail. The government supported anti-gun movement in this country has brainwashed the general public into believing that all guns are evil and therefore have no place in a civil society. The general consensus is that only the police and the military should possess guns......and criminals, of course.
All the draconian firearm laws so far enacted do nothing to counteract criminal misuse of firearms but instead penalizes only the law-abiding. The long standing joke that defines a Canadian as an "unarmed American with a public health plan" is closer to the truth than some would admit. Canada may well be held up as a sound example by anti-gun, liberal minded Americans.
Private gun ownership in Canada
I have tried, unsuccessfully, to appeal to the NRA to initiate a chapter in Canada. In the next few years private gun ownership in Canada will be a thing of the past. We don't have the luxury of the Second Amendment to fight against continuing gun confiscation. However, the lobbying strength of the NRA, were it available in Canada, would stem if not reverse the tide. We share a common border with similar ideals, goals and language. However, when it comes to the freedom of firearm ownership, we are now worlds apart.
If freedom loving, gun owning Americans, with their enormous political resources, fail to assist us in any possible way to stem the tide of the eventual confiscation of firearms in Canada, the end result may well be that we are the mirror of your own future.
