Chris Matthews: ‘What difference does it make why they did it?’

When the Boston Marathon bombing occurred, Chris Matthews was front and center among those trying to suggest that right-wing extremists were involved.  If you recall, he was salivating over the idea that a possible bombing at the JFK Library was a clue to the ideological leanings of the terrorists.
"I was just thinking, again, it's early; it's an early situation, but going after the Kennedy Library," Matthews said. "Not something at Bunker Hill, not something from the freedom trail or anything that kind of historic, but a modern political figure of the Democratic Party, Does that tell you anything?" Talk about leading the witness. He later made it clear that domestic terrorists tend to come from the right. "Let me ask you about domestic terrorism as a category Normally, domestic terrorists, people tend to be on the far right, well that's not a good category, just extremists, let's call them that. Do they advertise after they do something like this? Do they try to get credit as a group or do they just hate America so much or its politics or its government that they just want to do the damage, they don't care if they get public credit, if you will?"

Now, shockingly, Matthews doesn't care about any of that.  In fact, he can't figure out why the Tsarnaev brothers' motive really "matters." "Why is that important? Why is that important to prosecuting? I mean, what difference does it make why they did it, if they did it?" If this had turned out to be some anti-tax, pro-gun, crackpot, Matthews would NEVER stop reminding us of that fact. Their motives would become a constant, neverending, source of discussion. Since they're not crazed right-wingers, he can't even figure out why he should care about their reasoning. MSNBC continues to amaze.
