But..but...universal background checks will protect us, right?

Navy Yard shooter passed state & FBI background checks for shotgun purchase

Dan already did a great job spotlighting the fact that the current administration will press for gun control whether or not it will have any effect. They don't care about outcome. All that matters is appeasing their base and cracking down on the 2nd Amendment. So, the usual suspects are roaming around, beating the "common sense gun legislation drum." These days that means universal background checks, since that's about the only thing the vast majority of the American people haven't already rejected.

They promise us that the checks are needed to protect us from mass-murdering psychos like Aaron Alexis, who killed 12 people at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard. Unfortunately, once again, their narrative is falling apart. Alexis passed background checks at both the FBI and state levels when he purchased a shotgun prior to his rampage. From the Washington Times:
Aaron Alexis passed Federal Bureau Investigation and Virginia state background checks to purchase a shotgun from Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Va., over the weekend. Alexis did not attempt to purchase a rifle or handgun from the store, The Washington Times has learned exclusively. The retail store put the former Navy reservist’s name through both systems checks before selling him a shotgun and shotgun shells, a source familiar with the investigation said.
So, not only are the gun grabbers erroneously using the Navy Yard attacks as a justification for universal background check legislation, they're ignoring the fact that the laws they desperately want to implement were already in place and have already failed. Don't expect that to stop them.
