Shackles and chains

The federal government has us in economic slavery

With all the talk about the ObamaCare fiasco, which now the liberals want to call the Affordable Care Act, it’s all part of a bigger issue, that I call economic slavery for all.
As a great great grandson of slaves, I want to welcome those who are not descendants of slavery to the new slavery. Not the slavery of one man owning another as his property, but economic slavery – the slavery of a government bureaucracy that is out of control. To paraphrase Lincoln, you work and toil and earn bread, and someone else eats it. It’s exceedingly difficult for someone to escape systemic poverty, but it can be done. It’s getting harder to start or maintain a small business or pass one on to family members because of regulatory tyranny. And if you are able to escape poverty, or if you are just surviving paycheck to paycheck, you then have to content with an unfair tax code that tries to negate your economic progress all the way to the grave. Numerous factors affect the strength of the U.S. economy. Three government programs – the federal tax code, the Social Security system and the Medicare program – form the basis of our economic structure, and we can now add a fourth. ObamaCare. All of these have the greatest effect on people’s opportunities to attain economic freedom, or remain chained to the government in economic slavery.

That’s what it is when you look at it, not on a piecemeal basis, but in its totality. This new slavery is even more dangerous than the old slavery because you cannot see it in the public square or down on the plantation. It is tolerated through the generations because there is little they can do to unshackle themselves from its grip on their lives. That’s how a lot of people feel today. Economic slavery does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, sex or religion.

Controlling your life by controlling a growing amount of your money and your decisions

Those responsible for economic slavery only care about one thing – controlling your life by controlling a growing amount of your money and your decisions. Some of us may have arrived here on the Mayflower, and some of us on slave ships. But we are all in the same boat now. Median income keeps going down. Energy and health insurance costs keep going up. We are paying more in taxes. Federal spending and the national debt are out of control. There isn’t even really a debt ceiling, which means the federal government has a credit card with no limit. And yet those of us on Main Street are the ones who will be expected to pay the debt. Look at the increased number of people in poverty. Look at the train wreck that Social Security is headed for. But they don’t want to restructure it, so they use scare tactics to play on people’s emotions. Medicare has already been changed, and they didn’t even tell you about those changes. You find out when you get to the doctor. The number of people being forced to go on Medicaid is exploding because people are being caught between insurance they used to have and insurance they can’t get yet because this highly touted HealthCare.gov is not working as planned. And that’s why, folks, I call it economic slavery.
