Some while ago a Russian sub planted Russia’s flag on the bottom of the sea at the North Pole. Now, Canada claims ownership of the spot. Then there are also Denmark, Finland, Norway, and the U.S. with land masses nearest to the Pole. By all precedents, it would appear that each country does have a legitimate claim.

Geographic North Pole

Of course, the Geographic North Pole (GNP) is just an imagined dot on Earth where all meridians of longitude come together. It helps you in knowing where you are or may be going. In case you are not sure, just wait for a clear sky at night and find the North Star in the Big Dipper constellation which hovers above the pole, if you are in the northern hemisphere. If you live in a southern place, look for the Southern Cross constellation, as there is no prominent star over the South Pole.

Magnetic North Pole

Apart from the fixed GNP there is also a Magnetic North Pole (MNP). That’s the point your magnetic compass needle is pointing towards. To add to the complications and, in contrast to the GNP, the MNP is nowhere near the GNP and keeps wandering about. Even GM and other car manufacturers have recognized that problem and allow you to adjust your car’s compass for nature’s deviation.

The Ownership

As you will realize, none of the above establishes positive proof of ownership of the North Pole. For that we have to go back further in history. Even the trusted source 90 N does not have an answer, though it ought to be obvious. Just ask yourself: WHO has been residing at the North Pole since time immemorial? Of course, it’s SANTA! Merry Christmas to you All!
