Hon. Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario; Hon. Glen R. Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Ontario, Dear Premier Wynne, Dear Minister Murray, As of January 1st, 2017, consumers of carbon-based energy in Ontario are forced to pay for a “Cap and Trade” surcharge of approximately 5%. This additional levy on electricity, gasoline, diesel, and natural gas will reverberate throughout the province’s economy and raise all prices and costs, including food, heating, commuting, etc. Your claim that this new levy “… is designed to help fight climate change…” is a hollow ruse to extract more revenue from the already financially strapped resident people and companies of this (formerly) great province.
Your assertions that this new levy “…will benefit homeowners and the economy” (https://www.ontario.ca/page/cap-and-trade-ontario#section-1 ) is totally false. In fact, the exact opposite is the case. Moreover, are you aware that Germany, a country that claims to be a world-leader in renewable energy, is in the process of not-accounting of some 250 million tons p.a. of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from imported coal (See here: , and here)? Applying that kind of “reverse accounting” as currently in use in Germany, where the CO2 that derives from using imported coal is ascribed to the SOURCE of the carbon fuel rather than to its CONSUMER would mean that Ontario’s fossil resource energy users ought to get a “CARBON-CREDIT” rather than a ”Cap & Trade” PENALTY! After all, CO2 is absolutely vital to all life on earth! In short: I think it is high time that you rethink your energy and climate policies! Sincerely Yours, Klaus L.E. Kaiser, Ph.D., Dipl.-Chem., FCIC, C.Chem. cc: Ted McMeekin, MPP, Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale; Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada; Hon. Catherine McKenna, MP, Minister of Environment and Climate Change;
