The art of no deal.

Ted Cruz says his much-vaunted alliance with John Kasich never actually existed

On Tuesday, we talked about how the Cruz camp was hoping that the announcement of Carly Fiorina as Cruz's VP pick would give them a little media bounce. The goal was to put Tuesday's losses in the rear view mirror, build some positive steam, and bury the foul smelling corpse of Cruz's "deal" with John Kasich. I pointed out that the bargain with Kasich was about as well-received as your alcoholic Uncle showing up on Christmas morning, and argued that - in the long term - latching on to Kasich would do more harm than good.
Apparently, I shouldn't have bothered with it. Kasich began violating the deal's terms almost as soon as it became public knowledge, and now Cruz is claiming that it never existed in the first place.
Speaking to reporters before a rally with Carly Fiorina, his would-be running mate, Mr. Cruz was asked about the status of the agreement, which stipulated that Mr. Kasich would cede Indiana to Mr. Cruz if Mr. Cruz abandoned plans to campaign in New Mexico and Oregon. (Mr. Kasich instantly complicated matters by urging Indiana voters on Monday to support him, anyway.) "I recognize that the media is all eager to talk about an alliance. There is no alliance,” Mr. Cruz said. “Kasich and I made a determination where to focus our energies, where to focus our assets, where to focus our resources.” While he said the two agreed that Donald J. Trump would be a disastrous Republican nominee, Mr. Cruz cast Mr. Kasich’s participation in the gambit as something less than altruistic. "John Kasich made the decision, in his own political self-interest, to withdraw from Indiana and to go compete elsewhere,” Mr. Cruz said, while continuing to campaign in the state six days before its primary. “And that was a perfectly reasonable decision.”

See? It was totally not a choreographed agreement, it was just two people with similar interests, doing what they felt like doing. Then the press came along and blew it up into some or 'deal' where the two would collude to stop Trump. Nothing, we're now assured, could be further from the truth. Are you buying that?
Mr. Cruz did not answer questions about whether he was similarly pulling out of Oregon, which votes on May 17, or Oregon, which votes on June 7. Minutes later, taking the stage at a convention hall, Mr. Cruz told voters that Mr. Kasich had no path to victory.
One could also argue that Cruz has no path to victory, but why pick nits? Carly's in, Kasich's out. Or he was never in. ...Or something.

The fact is, the Cruz and Kasich camps probably cut "the deal," then buyer's remorse set in. Cruz realized that the whole thing went over about as well as Ishtar, and Kasich realized that there was no point to it since it did nothing to improve his standing - especially once rumors started circulating about Fiorina. All in all, it's precisely the kind of well executed plan you've come to expect from the modern GOP.
