A Battle Royal?

A Battle Royal? With the U.S. announcing substantial duties on imports of steel and aluminum products from Canada, Europe, and Mexico, some nerves are getting a bit frayed. Counter-duties on similar and other goods imported from the U.S. are being bandied about.

Sand on the Beach

Sand on the Beach Have you noticed yet? Sand is In! Apart from the fact that my friends and I are going on annual trips to the environs of “Sandy Lake” in Ontario, or that all the natural gas/oil “fracking” (causing and keeping open miniscule underground fissures) consumes a lot of fine sand to keep the underground rock fissures open, or its use in producing cement mix than can be troweled into smooth surfaces, or in the playground of your children or grandchildren, sand is one of those natural things that are truly plentiful and -- amazing.

Placeboism

Placeboism Everyone knows (or ought to): Everything is getting better all the time. That’s certainly true in spring or early summer, when nature re-awakens after a long and cold winter but, just perhaps, not all the time. And that’s why cunning politicians like to make big promises and have elections at those times. That’s just one example of the placebo effect, the proclamation that “your vote counts.”

Getting into the Loop of Things -- (on the lighter side)

Getting into the Loop of ThingsBetween my Dearest and me, we ought to have it covered. Nearly any website that we go to for some vital information (from knitting patterns to expansion modules of uncommon materials and all the other great snippets of important needs) appears to have some problems, at least with some parts of it.

Space--an Eternal Frontier

Space--an Eternal Frontier From astronomers to futuristic dreamers, the inter-stellar space is the real frontier--for many centuries already. Anyone who's looking at the firmament on a clear summer night is likely to agree. There is a "world" of stars, planets, moons, galaxies, and a host of other -- mostly unfathomable -- objects out there. One can't deny that.

Tim's Fix

Tim's Fix Tim, as in Tim Hortons (TH) has had some problems as of late. So do, or did, some of its franchisees and they have turned into "rebels" of a sort. As you may recall, Tim Horton (1930-1974) used to be a professional Canadian ice hockey giant, one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history . Tim and his buddy built a great chain of donut shops. That was decades ago and a long-time favorite for anyone thirsting for a cup of coffee with a little sugar fix on the side.

A Hope in Hell?

A Hope in Hell? I hope that I will never need to be exonerated... ... and for one simple reason only: I'd like to live to the end of my natural life--without any undue acceleration of my demise.

Pot and--Tarantulas?

Pot and--Tarantulas? Canada exports a variety of goods to the world market. A good chunk of that is semi-processed materials like metal ores, zinc ingots, coils of rolled steel, sheets of aluminum, lumber and plywood, crude oil and "syncrude" (a liquefied form of bitumen), natural gas, agricultural livestock and its products, grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, processed products from the seafood industry, and so forth.

On the Fly

Are you waiting for delivery – of your EV, electric vehicle, SPACEX Sorry to have to disappoint you (again). As the main-stream media reported everywhere, the top Roadster model, modified, and complete with a mannequin behind the wheel together with its miniature relative, was just sent into a circum-solar trajectory – never to be seen again by potential eager buyers on this planet. But it is really fast, travelling at a speed of 6,864 miles/hour!

A Mid-Winter Special -- Groundhog Musings

A Mid-Winter Special -- Groundhog Musings Dear Cousin Punxsutawney Phil, Cordial thanks for your response to my letter of last year to our Aunt Climate. I think you were right on target and our great aunt has listened to our gripes. Of course, she’s not alone; as you know the U.S. President, in his speech on the State of the Union, a couple of nights ago, did not even mention “climate change” once. Presumably, he had read the letter too and him and aunty agreed to finally boost the production of that formerly claimed “evil-extraordinaire,” the trace gas carbon dioxide, also known as CO2 in the atmosphere.

Robbing Graves or Prolonging Life?

Robbing Graves or Prolonging Life? Nagoya, Japan, is the place where the international "Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity" was negotiated (in 2010) and signed onto by many countries. It became a binding international treaty (to the countries which ratified it) in 2015. Let's just call the arrangement the Nagoya Protocol, or NP for short.

The POT-Boom

The POT-Boom As more, higher, bigger, etc. must be is the envisaged goal of every sane soul on the planet (my understanding of "economics"); just having one craze suffices no longer. By now, the world needs a minimum of two concurring manias and, as I surmise, even that will soon be "bettered."
