Will America Help the Persecuted Copts of Egypt?

By Ray Nothstine
The violent persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt is becoming harder for the free world to ignore. This is true thanks to thousands of Copts who recently expressed their decades of frustration and anguish in street protests across the globe. One moving example took place in West Los Angeles, Calif., latimesblogs.latimes.com last month. With American flags in hand, over a thousand Copts peacefully demonstrated. One boy simply said, “It is very dangerous in Egypt that is why we need America to help us.”

Christians of Egypt are Massacred, and President Mubarak is Still Silent

The Copts, Egypt’s Christian minority, number approximately 12 million, about 15% of Egypt’s population. Under the rule of President Mubarak, violent attacks against them run rampant. These attacks were once carried out mainly by organized Islamic terrorist groups. The climate of hatred in Egypt has worsened to the point that attacks against Christians are now carried out by their Muslim neighbors.

Christmas Day Massacre

In a horrific attack in Qena, Egypt on a Coptic Church after Christmas Eve mass on January 6, 2010, three Muslim gunmen opened fire on churchgoers in an attempt to assassinate Coptic Bishop Kirollos of the Nag Hamadi Diocese. The attack led to the death of seven young Coptic Christians and the injury of fifteen. So, instead of the usual joyous Christmas festivities, mourners filled the streets in a heartbreaking funeral procession for the victims on Christmas day, the youngest being only nineteen. Local police officials were aware of the attack ahead of time and warned they would not be responsible for anything that occurred after 10PM. The attack was in retaliation to the churches refusal to participate in government sponsored forced reconciliation sessions, after a November 2009 attack by Muslims on Coptic properties.

Rightly so, for no other story offers such a powerful and sublime mixture of wonder, pain, hope and love. Paradoxically, the very thing that makes this story so irresistible to some also stands as a stumbling block to others, because to them its claims seem so fantastic that they could hardly be true.
